The flood that hit Jakarta on Thursday, 17th January 2013, had swamped a multitude of locations throughout the capital, including the Tomang area where the Tarumanagara University campus is located.
Among the affected areas, a deep flood submerged Tarumanagara University along with residential areas and some parts of the city extending to the Cideng Sub-district. People from the area were eventually forced to take refuge at shelters, including Tomang Sub-district’s headman, Drs. Djoko Nugroho.
As the growing number of refugees needed aid, Tomang’s administrative authority took the initiative to contact Tarumanagara University on the afternoon of that day to ask for food assistance as well as other equipment.
Following coordination with the Vice Rector for Student Affairs, supplies were acquired from Carrefour M.T. Haryono in the morning of 18th January 2013. The site also functioned for holding coordination meetings between lecturers who participated as volunteers.
